SV Werder Bremen

“We know we need to defend well”

SV Werder Bremen are away against RB Leipzig on Sunday, 14th May (17:30 CEST). Following a 2-1 defeat at home to FC Bayern last time out, SVW are looking to get back to winning ways, which would also secure a place in the Bundesliga next season. However, this may already be the case by the time Werder take on Leipzig, depending on the results of the other games on matchday 32. For Leipzig, this fixture is about picking up three points in their quest to qualify for next season’s Champions League, while they have also reached the DFB-Pokal final once again. They will take on Eintracht Frankfurt in a few weeks time.

“Focused on our own game”

SV Werder Bremen will close out matchday 32 away at RB Leipzig (14/05/2023, 17:30 CEST). Head coach Ole Werner was optimistic during the pre-match press conference, despite the news that Amos Pieper is out for the remainder of the season (ankle), Niclas Füllkrug is unavailable this weekend (calf) and Milos Veljkovic remains a doubt. “Familiarising ourselves with the various formations doesn’t make things easy for us,” he said, “Nevertheless, every player that steps foot out on the pitch has a duty to play.”

Amos Pieper ruled out for the rest of the season

SV Werder Bremen will be without Amos Pieper for the remaining three games of the season. The 25-year-old will undergo an operation for an ongoing ankle problem.

“A city crazy about football”

Marvin Ducksch’s form in the second half of the season especially has made everyone across the country take note of the striker. Ducksch has set up six goals this season and scored a further 12, including nine since the midway mark. Overall, he has been directly involved in the fifth-most goals across the entire division. Ahead of the trip to Leipzig this Sunday (17:30 CEST), he talked about his development, interest from other clubs and his chances of a Germany call-up.

“The ketchup bottle effect is no lie”

Niclas Füllkrug is currently supporting his teammates from the stands due to a calf problem that has prevented the striker, who has otherwise been having a perfect season, from playing. After promotion, Werder’s number 11 was able to seamlessly continue his performances from last season. He has not only made the Germany national squad this season, but tops the Bundesliga scoring charts.

Werder beaten by Bayern despite spirited performance

SV Werder Bremen suffered a defeat in Bundesliga matchday 31 despite fighting to the end. SVW showed a committed performance for long periods of the game at home to the league leaders FC Bayern Munich, before Serge Gnabry finally broke to deadlock to make it 1-0 (62’). Despite the effort and team spirit, it was the record champions to score next and double their lead through substitute Leroy Sané (72’). Niklas Schmidt’s wonder goal (86’) was for sure the moment of the evening, but despite a tense final period, it was not enough to pick up any points.

“We put up a good fight”

There were mixed feelings among the Green-Whites after the 2-1 defeat against Bayern Munich. Although SV Werder put in a strong performance against the league leaders, the quality of the record champions proved superior in the end. “When you play against a big club with that quality, a top performance from us today isn’t enough,” said goal scorer Niklas Schmidt after the game.

Out to trip up the league leaders

At 18:30 CEST on Saturday night (06.05.2023), SV Werder Bremen will welcome the league leaders FC Bayern München to the wohninvest WESERSTADION. The visitors have suffered setbacks to their season in recent weeks, being knocked out of both the DFB-Pokal and the Champions League, however, they are back on top of the Bundesliga after some topsy turvy matchdays that have left challengers Dortmund one point adrift. Werder have no intentions of handing over three important points in the race for the title though, as they could also prove decisive in SVW securing their top-flight status.

“It would be frustrating not to be there on the day when everything works out”

At the press conference ahead of the home match against FC Bayern Munich on Saturday evening (06/05, 18:30 CEST), head coach Ole Werner politely accepted the birthday wishes from the media representatives. Afterwards, the 35-year-old looked ahead to the upcoming match against the league leaders.

“It will always be something special”

It’s been almost five years since Marco Friedl pulled on the green and white of SV Werder for the first time. He only really knew the red of FC Bayern München before that, however. Alongside his Austrian hometown of Kirchbichl, the 25-year-old also called Munich home for much of his life and still has a special connection to the city and the club, so there’s added anticipation for the Bremen captain this week in the build-up to Saturday’s meeting between SVW and FCB (18:30 CEST).
