Ducksch has been without his strike partner Niclas Füllkrug for the last four games. They are the most prolific front two in the Bundesliga with 28 goals to their name this season. “I work really well with Fülle,” said Werder’s number 7, “but the other two have done an excellent job too.” By the other two, Ducksch was referring to Maximilian Philipp and Niklas Schmidt. The latter scored a stunner against Bayern at the weekend, while Philipp grabbed his first goal for the club in the home game against Freiburg. “I just wanted to help them feel good on the pitch next to me,” stated the 29-year-old. The change in teammate alongside him certainly hasn’t had a negative effect on his game – he scored a hat-trick in Berlin and once at Schalke too.

“I feel right at home here”

It’s therefore no surprise that other clubs have been keeping an eye on SVW’s striker. This, however, is not important to Ducksch. “I’m only focused on Werder Bremen right now. It’s obviously nice to hear and read these things, but I’m fully concentrating on my work here. I feel right at home here and have done since I arrived. I knew before joining how crazy this city is about football.”

After a successful campaign in the second division last season, this is his first as a regular first-team player in the Bundesliga. When asked if this was his best ever season, he wasn’t definitive with his answer. “Yeah, I suppose you could say that. It’s been a long road to get here though.” Despite his strong form, a call up to the national team isn’t on his mind right now. “I think I’m a far way off that still. Nevertheless, I will continue to try and impress with my performances. Everyone obviously dreams of playing for their country.”
