Line-up and formation: After four wins on the trot, Ole Werner saw no reason to make any changes to his starting XI or tactics for the final game against Bochum. Friedl led the side out as captain, and Woltemade made an appearance in the line-up in his final game at the club.

Werder’s starting XI: Zetterer, Jung, Ducksch, Weiser, Bittencourt, Veljkovic, Lynen, Schmid, Agu, Woltemade, Friedl.

Bench: Pavlenka, Deman, Stark, Stage, Kownacki, Hansen-Aarøen, Malatini, Alvero, Groß.

Captain Friedl steps up to the plate

First-half highlights:

6th minute: GOALLLL!!! Ducksch’s corner finds Friedl in the middle, and the captain chests it down, takes a swing, and powers home an early opener for the Green-Whites!

25th minute: Werder win back possession and Bittencourt slots the ball into the path of Marvin Ducksch, who hurtles towards the Bochum keeper, but he’s stopped in his tracks.

30th minute: Ducksch delivers a cross into the middle, which is met by a sliding Romano Schmid, but he can’t keep it down and the ball flies over the bar.

35th minute: It’s painfully close! Weiser puts one into the centre, which is picked up once again by Werder’s number 20. He takes a touch and lets fly, but his effort is denied by the crossbar.

Goals galore

Second half-highlights:

51st minute: Bittencourt tees up Ducksch in the box, and the forward has a go, but Riemann reacts quickly and gets a hand to it. Werder’s number 10 pounces on the rebound, but Bochum’s keeper is on hand once again to deny the Green-whites their second.

78th minute: Werder find the back of the net! Ducksch puts a ball into the middle, where Anthony Jung is waiting to nod it home from the front post!

79th minute: Unbelievable!! The Green-Whites bag another through Jens Stage! Schmid drives a cross into the centre, which is met by the midfielder, who heads it into the Bochum net.

85th minute: Bochum get one back through Antwi-Adjei, who struck it past Zetterer from a tight angle.

87th minute: It’s four!! Romano Schmid rises to the occasion and drives the ball forward and nutmegs the defender, before powering it into the far corner.

90th minute +6: Full-time. Werder beat Bochum 4-1 in their final game of the season!

Summary: SV Werder Bremen deservedly emerged victorious in the last dance of the 2023/24 campaign after putting in an excellent performance against relegated side VfL Bochum. The Green-Whites repeatedly created chances after scoring their opener, with opportunities to increase the deficit being denied by both the visitors’ keeper and the crossbar. SVW were disciplined at the back and thus rewarded for their hard work with three goals after the break. While Werder were able to celebrate finishing their season in 9th and on a five game unbeaten run, VfL’s campaign ended in heartbreak as their remaining hopes of another year in the Bundesliga were crushed by the Green-Whites.
