What a bitter afternoon for the Green-Whites. After a goalless first half, SVW fell to a 2-1 defeat against 1. FC Union Berlin on Saturday at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei. The hosts found the net twice in the space of two minutes through Vertessen (50’) and Aaronson (52’), and while Weiser was able to get one back for Werder (63’), the Green-Whites regrettably had to travel back to Bremen empty-handed.

A welcome reunion

All eyes were on Niclas Füllkrug on Saturday as he returned to Osterdeich for the first time since his move to Borussia Dortmund. Before the game, the reigning Bundesliga Golden Boot winner was given an official farewell by the SV Werder management with a picture, a bouquet of flowers and an SVW varsity jacket. “I met up with a lot of old friends and acquaintances today,” said Füllkrug after the game. “I was very happy to be able to express my gratitude to the fans once again.”

Niklas Stark set for several weeks on the sidelines

Bad news for Werder: an MRI scan has revealed that defender Niklas Stark suffered an ankle ligament injury against Borussia Dortmund. Stark was withdrawn in the 83rd minute following a coming-together with Karim Adeyemi and will now be unavailable for the next few weeks.

Heartbreak at home against BVB

After delivering a strong second-half performance, SV Werder Bremen were unlucky to come away empty-handed from the matchday 25 clash against Borussia Dortmund at the wohninvest WESERSTADION. Donyell Malen put the visitors ahead with a skilful scissor kick in the 21st minute, which was followed by a second from youngster Jaden Sancho not long after (38’).
