SV Werder Bremen booked their place in their Bundesliga next season after a long campaign of ups and downs. Even though the whole team contributed to this achievement, a Player of the Season still needed to be found. Fans voted on Instagram for their favourite player and Niclas Füllkrug was the winner.

As Niclas Füllkrug was on the team bus to Bremen, he would not have been able to avoid noticing how many fans were making the trip to the wohninvest WESERSTADION wearing his shirt, with many also in green and white. The 1,000th international game for Germany in the city where he has impressed the national coach for months with his performances will hold a special place in his footballing career. “The fans pushed me on,” said Füllkrug, who walked out with his daughter for the game against Ukraine. “It was a particularly nice occasion, I was very happy.”

It is the start of an even closer partnership in the future: SV Werder Bremen’s first team will play the first friendly game of the new season on 9th July 2023 at 15:30 CEST in Verden (Aller), the home of the new main sponsor Matthäi. Their opponents at the Stadion am Berliner Ring will be SV Drochtersen/Assel, currently in the Regionalliga.

Germany’s first game in Bremen in 11 years will be a special one, and not just for the locals. It will be the 1,000th game in Germany’s history, with Ukraine set to visit the wohninvest WESERSTADION for a charity match on Monday evening  (12/6, 18:00 CEST). Niclas Füllkrug is part of Germany’s 26-man squad for the game.
