Christian Streich to leave SC Freiburg at the end of the season

“I took a long time to reflect and discuss the decision, but I feel that after 29 years, now is the right time to make way for new impetus, new people and new opportunities. It has always been extremely important to me to make sure to step back at the right moment in which I feel it’s the right time to go,” said Streich. “I have been able to enjoy hundreds of special moments and memories during my time at SC. This club is my life and I’m extremely grateful for the close cooperation and support that I’ve been able to enjoy here. I’m excited to see what comes next for this club and I know that the right decisions will be made to ensure that we continue on in the same manner as we have over the last years and decades – always looking ahead and with our heads held high, even through tough times.”

Nine SC players away on international duty

Qualifying for the U21 EUROs is also in full swing, with Noah Atubolu and Merlin Röhl in action with the Germany U21s as they face Kosovo U21s in Chemnitz and Israel U21s in Halle. Kiliann Sildillia and the France U21s will play two friendlies this week against Côte d’Ivoire U21s and the USA U21s.

Narrow defeat against Leverkusen

Not ten minutes after Wirtz’s goal, Ritsu Doan produced a piece of magic of his own, cutting in from the right-hand side, again not being closed down decisively enough, he smashed the ball low into the bottom right corner to equalise (10’). SC had found a strong response to going behind early with their first shot on target. With this goal SC became braver on the ball, especially through Doan on the right-hand side, whose cross was narrowly missed by Vincenzo Grifo at the backpost in the 15th minute. SC had taken a few minutes but had now found their footing in the game, forcing the ‘Werkself’ into careless errors in possession and they had another chance in the 20th minute, with Christian Günter letting fly from distance.

“Pool our strengths” against the league leaders

However, one only needs to think back to the meeting between the sides earlier this season, which SC narrowly lost 2-1, to know that it’s possible to make things tough for Leverkusen. Several clubs have pushed the Werkself to the brink of defeat this term, although none have managed to succeed yet. With several talented players in their ranks, Leverkusen have the quality to pose a constant threat on goal. One such player is Florian Wirtz, who scored against Freiburg in this season’s reverse fixture. “We defended well against them earlier this season, but two moments of brilliance were enough to help Leverkusen come out on top,” Christian Streich said when looking back on the game.

SCF exit in the round of 16 once again

In the first leg at the Europa-Park Stadion, the visitors from Freiburg were able to earn themselves a small advantage going into the second leg at the London Stadium, as Michael Gregoritsch’s late goal gave SCF a one-goal lead going into the return fixture.

The next step towards the quarter-finals

The narrow advantage won’t lead to SCF taking a completely different approach to this game, as Christian Streich emphasised at a press conference the evening before the game. “At 1-0, the situation isn’t much different. It’s all about what we put into practice on the pitch, how brave we are and what options we give our players with the ball at their feet.” It will also be important to prepare the team for all possibilities depending on the opponent’s set-up.

Narrow win in Bochum

Michael Gregoritsch started in place of Lucas Höler upfront, and he and the team both had the aim to finally win in the Bundesliga again. After a short delay due to pyrotechnics in the Bochum end, SC initially had to excel in defence because it was the hosts who started more aggressively, let the ball do the running for them, and forced Noah Atubolu into a save after 14 minutes. Keven Schlotterbeck shot from the edge of the box and SC’s shotstopper turned the ball round the post for a corner.

“We want to finally win in the league again”

Günter and Matthias Ginter were in agreement that Freiburg needed to “recover well” after their intense match in the Europa League. Thankfully, there are more options in the squad again after various injury lay-offs. “More and more players are coming back,” Günter also noted, while he himself is now ready for 90 minutes again after a long period out. “That’s important for us,” he continued. “The lads who are coming off the bench are doing really well.” An example of this from the game against West Ham is Michael Gregoritsch, who came on in the 70th minute, had his first chance in the 73rd, and scored the winning goal in the 81st minute. He went straight in to help his teammates without needing any time to settle into the game.

SC to face St. Gallen in friendly

FCSG currently occupy fifth place in the Swiss Super League. If they maintain that position, they will qualify for the league’s Championship Group, in which the top six teams compete for the league title and European qualification. Chima Okoroji, who played twice for SC Freiburg, will be reunited with the club after his move from SV Sandhausen to the Green-Whites in the summer transfer window.

SCF set the standard in last 16 first leg

Freiburg certainly made the better start to the game. They played an active role in proceedings with Christian Günter bombing down the left wing with real motivation, putting pressure on the Londoners. The ball was moving nicely, and SCF were dictating the game. Christian Streich was applauding his team as they won challenges and won back possession. SC were looking good: “The team played a calm and clear game, with most of our attacks resulting in a shot,” commented Christian Streich. “We passed the ball around nicely, which mean it didn’t turn into a wild game, but it was rather much more controlled.” SCF were just lacking clear-cut chances against the Irons’ solid back four. Maximilian Eggestein had a go from long range in the 19th minute, but his shot went both high and wide.
