27-year-old ‘trapped’ at ‘very toxic’ Tottenham as €14m transfer negotiations ‘advance’

Clement Lenglet is ‘trapped’ at Tottenham, and may remain that way for the foreseeable future as talks over a permanent move from Barcelona are ‘advancing’.

Spanish outlet Sport say he’s ‘trapped’ in north London in a team ‘that is falling apart’.

It’s claimed the atmosphere is ‘very toxic’, with Antonio Conte’s ‘hasty’ exit harming the dressing room. Conte slamming his own players’ attitude probably didn’t help either, but anyway…

Despite those problems, Sport claim Spurs are likely to move forward with a permanent deal for Lenglet, with talks over that move ‘advancing’ despite the injury the 27-year-old picked up against Bournemouth.

And unsurprisingly, given their dire financial situation, Barcelona are very keen for Tottenham to complete the €14m transfer.

With Athletic Bilbao’s Inigo Martinez set to arrive at the Nou Camp on a free transfer, the Catalans ‘will try to get Tottenham’ to buy Lenglet, and it’s expected negotiations will continue when Conte’s permanent successor is appointed.

That could be key of course, with the incoming manager not necessarily as keen on the Frenchman as Conte was.

In December, Antonio Conte refused to declare whether Lenglet would remain at Tottenham past his loan spell, saying:  “I don’t know the situation about his contract.

“I can make an evaluation about what I see in training and on the pitch, then I can give my opinion to the club. But you know, the club has the last decision.

“Clement is a really good player, don’t forget that we are talking someone who played five years in Barcelona. When you play for many years in this type of club, with great history, great importance, it means that you are a good player.

“When I spoke with him in the summer I was very clear with him, if you decide to play you have to come with us, you will play, a really good player good personality, technically and good choices in the game.”
