Chelsea star Wesley Fofana has revealed Frank Lampard’s rallying cry ahead of their clash with Real Madrid that appeared to have no impact on the players.

Goals in each half from Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio secured a comfortable victory for Carlo Ancelotti’s side as Chelsea now face an uphill battle to turn things around at Stamford Bridge next week.

Fofana – who had a rotten evening attempting to deal with Vinicius Junior – revealed Lampard’s motivational message before kick-off, which quite clearly had no material effect on

Fofana told the Chelsea website: “He [Lampard] said play for the club, the badge and for Chelsea.

“We will prepare for the next game. We lost tonight but when you see the game it is OK, as 2-0 isn’t the worst. There are positives to take.

“It is hard for everybody as one coach comes in, he leaves and then another coach arrives.

“Every player is focused on winning games. We are Chelsea, a big club.

“It is important to try our best for everyone to win more games. it is complicated, of course, the Champions League is the biggest competition and we will still try to win it.”

After the game, Lampard claimed the “door is open” ahead of the return leg in west London.

“It’s a big challenge of course, a team of the quality of Real Madrid,” .

“The door is open, it’s up to us if we want to kick it open further.

“Mixed emotions about the game. For a period with 11 men, we were in the game, we had some chances. I think we could do better, be more urgent.

“There are things for myself and the staff and the players to work on. I saw opportunity there that we didn’t quite take. The spirit was great at the end of the game was great – ten men for half an hour, you understand a lot of things can happen.
