Having started the year with two emphatic wins, VfL have now taken just one point from the last four games. They have a new chance to turn the tide this Saturday, 25 February (kick-off 15:30 CET), when the Wolves visit 1. FC Köln. At Thursday’s pre-match press conference, head coach Niko Kovac spoke about topics including…

… the lessons from Leipzig: “What we need is good intensity with the ball and, of course, without the ball as well. If we don’t manage to defend our goal, as has been the case recently, then it’s going to be difficult. The first step is to defend well, so that we can then let our attacking abilities flourish. We’ve already demonstrated we can do that.“

… the current performance level: “We have a young team, and young players have the tendency to go through highs and lows. The fluctuations are greater than with experienced players. That’s just how it is, and we have to work at it. That comes with time, though. You can’t buy the experience you need – you just have to gain it.”

… team news: “Lukas Nmecha is ill and won’t be available. With Maxence Lacroix, I think and hope he can be involved at the weekend. Everyone else was in training today.”

… 1. FC Köln: “FC played really great football last season and have done for large parts of this season too. We’re facing a team who play with very high intensity, who constantly put opponents under pressure, get into the box a lot but also defend well and aggressively out of possession.”

… the plan for the match: “We have to make sure that we hold our own. We all know the atmosphere at Köln, it’s going to be a nice game. We need to finally get back to doing what served us well, namely good defending.”
