September: Markus Krapf becomes new president

Year in review 2022, part nine

An emotional 12 months full of highs and lows are drawing to a close. As we enter the last few weeks of the year, FC Augsburg are looking back on the last 365 days. In the ninth part of our series, we look at September.

After the game away at TSG Hoffenheim, FC Augsburg had their third home game of the season. There were emotional scenes before the match, as the club said goodbye to long-serving player Jan Morávek. FCA would have to wait further for a first home win of the season though, falling to a 2-0 defeat against Hertha.

On Matchday 6, FC Augsburg had their first Friday night game of the season. The long trip up north to face SV Werder Bremen was worth it, as Enrico Maaßen’s men celebrated a 1-0 win following a passionate performance. Ermedin Demirović converted a Mergim Berisha cross from close range in the 63rd minute. There was still plenty of drama as the game came to its conclusion, with Werder being awarded a penalty in injury time. Fortunately, FCA goalkeeper Rafał Gikiewicz was on hand to make a strong save to keep Augsburg ahead.

FCA beat record champions

FC Augsburg had previously celebrated a 2-1 home win against Bayern Munich last season. FCA sensationally managed to repeat the feat once again against their fellow Bavarians in front of a sell-out crowd of 30,660 at the WWK ARENA. This time they won 1-0, with the winning goal, his first in the Bundesliga, being scored by Mergim Berisha.

After that was the first international break of the season, with seven FCA players in total going on international duty. At the same time, Enrico Maaßen and the rest of the team played a friendly at the Rosenaustadion against Austria Lustenau, winning 5-2 and giving themselves a confidence boost moving forward. Above all, Mergim Berisha showed his hunger for goals, scoring four times, with Mads Pedersen contributing the other.

New president, first members’ evening

After Klaus Hofmann stepped down, the FC Augsburg Supervisory Board elected a new president in September. Augsburg-born Markus Krapf took over with immediate effect and as honourary Chairman of the Board represents the interests of more than 21,000 FCA members. In order to introduce himself to the members and start a dialogue with them, Krapf’s first act as president was to invite members to a members’ evening in the LEW Business Club at the WWK ARENA.
