October: FCA beat Schalke in thriller

Year in review 2022, Part ten

An emotional 12 months full of highs and lows are drawing to a close. As we enter the last few weeks of the year, FC Augsburg are looking back on the last 365 days. In the tenth part of our series, we take a look at October.

Following the international break, Augsburg travelled to Gelsenkirchen to face strugglers Schalke 04 and the sides served up a five goal thriller at the VELTINS-Arena. Despite the fact that Mergim Berisha was sent from the field for a second yellow card, an Ermedin Demirović brace and an André Hahn header gave FCA a 3-2 win and their third league victory on the bounce.

The Fuggerstädter picked up another hard-fought point against Wolfsburg on matchday 9. The home side were blighted by a couple of key of injuries going into the game with André Hahn and Rafał Gikiewicz both missing out. Tomáš Koubek came into the side to replace the injured goalkeeper. Despite going behind early on in the contest, Robert Gumny’s equaliser in the 55th minute was enough to give FCA their first draw of the campaign.

Rexhbecaj captains the side for the first time

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw was suspended for the clash against FC Köln on matchday 10, meaning Elvis Rexhbecaj took over as captain for the first time. Maaßen’s side’s four game unbeaten run came to an end after a narrow 3-2 defeat. Florian Niederlechner and Daniel Caligiuri got on the scoresheet for FCA.

Just three days later, Augsburg were in cup action against FC Bayern at the WWK Arena. The home side, however, couldn’t repeat their heroics of September as they fell to a heavy 5-2 defeat and were thus eliminated from the tournament in the second round.

The Fuggerstädter suffered another setback the following Saturday when they blew a three-goal lead against RB Leipzig. The determined guests scored three goals in the final 20 minutes and FCA had to ultimately settle for a point.

The bad luck continued against VfB Stuttgart on matchday 12. Florian Niederlechner gave Augsburg the lead with less than five minutes on the clock, before Sehrou Guirassy levelled for the hosts. The game looked to be heading for a draw but Waldemar Anton snatched a winner for VfB in the 91st minute.

Engagement off the pitch

After a two year break due to the pandemic, the players and the staff were once again able to surprise the first-graders in Augsburg’s primary schools and the young supporters received special FCA gym bags. Guided tours and youngster press conferences for new KidsClub members were also able to take place in person once again.
