March: An away win in Bielefeld and a piece of bad news

Year in review 2022, Part three

An emotional 12 months full of highs and lows are drawing to a close. As we enter the last few weeks of the year, FC Augsburg are looking back on the last 365 days. In the third part of our series, we take a look at March.

After three defeats from three on the road in 2022, it proved to be fourth time lucky for Augsburg as they took on Arminia Bielefeld at the SchücoArena. Daniel Caligiuri’s smart half volley shortly after half time was enough to give FCA all three points in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The win moved Augsburg above their opponents in the Bundesliga table and they further solidified their impressive record against Bielefeld in the process. The 1-0 victory made it eight games unbeaten against Arminia in all competitions, a run which includes six wins and two draws.

There was, however, a piece of bad news in the week that followed the game. Noah Sarenren Bazee tore his ACL in his right knee in training and was ruled out for the remainder of the season.

A late blow denies FCA a vital point

After a weekend without Bundesliga matches, Augsburg were next in action the following Saturday against VfB Stuttgart. Despite taking the lead twice through André Hahn and Michael Gregoritsch, Weinzierl’s side ultimately fell to a 3-2 defeat after conceding a late winner and missed out on a crucial point in the fight for survival.

Following the VfB game, seven players went away on international duty: Ricardo Pepi (USA), Michael Gregoritsch (Austria), Carlos Gruezo (Ecuador), Andi Zeqiri (Switzerland), Ruben Vargas (Switzerland), Mads Pedersen (Denmark), Frederik Winter (Denmark U21s).
