Mitchell Weiser knows that time as a professional footballer is limited. “I’m going to be 29 soon and I’ve only got seven or eight years left in my career if things go well.” After already establishing himself as a regular Bundesliga player, the winger would like to make another dream come true and play at a major international tournament.

Werder trio to miss the first training session of the week

SV Werder will start the training week ahead of the home game against Bayer Leverkusen with some players missing. Captain Marco Friedl, Romano Schmid and Christian Groß will not be out there with the team due to illness. Milos Veljkovic and Dikeni Salifou will return to training, however, and Niklas Stark will take part only partially in the team training after recovering from his illness.

Werder narrowly lose 2-1 to Augsburg

Despite passionate attacking play right up to the last second, SVW lost to Augsburg 2-1. The opening period got off to an eventful start without hesitation from either side, with a goal apiece. The opening goal by Beljo (6’) was cancelled out by Jens Stage ten minutes later (16’) when the Dane was in the right position at the back post. After that, both teams continued to attack and have chances, and went into half time deservedly level. In the second half, the hosts came out of the dressing room wide awake and took the lead again through Maier (46’). FCA then dropped back and managed to preserve their lead until the end.

Home games against Hoffenheim and Freiburg on Sunday

The DFL have scheduled matchdays 26 to 29 for the 2022/2023 Bundesliga season. The home games against TSG Hoffenheim and SC Freiburg will take place on Sunday. The away matches at FSV Mainz 05 and Hertha BSC will both be on Saturday at 15:30 CEST.

Head coach Ole Werner addressed the media during his pre-match press conference ahead of the away game against FC Augsburg. “They are a team who will look to interrupt the game with lots of tackles,” he said. A total of 3,500 fans are expected to travel to Saturday’s game to support the Green-Whites.

An emotional, relieving goal

As Niklas Schmidt’s number came up on the fourth official’s board, a large portion of the 42,100 in attendance at the sold out wohninvest WESERSTADION took to their feet to applaud his performance in Werder’s 3-0 win over VfL Bochum, which saw him get on the scoresheet. It wasn’t just the crowd who were pleased with Schmidt, as teammate Marvin Ducksch made an effort to come over to the midfielder as he was heading off the field to congratulate him. He described his first Bundesliga goal at the wohninvest WESERSTADION as ‘unbelievably emotional and relieving’.
