Weiser, who moved to Werder on a permanent basis from Leverkusen last summer, has put in some excellent performances for the club on the right wing and some people had started to discuss a possible call-up to the Germany side for him. However, the 28-year-old is now exploring the possibility of representing Algeria instead. “The decision is up to him,” stated Clemens Fritz. “I will speak to him again about it because I’m interested in his thoughts on the matter. He’s experienced a lot as a player throughout his career.”

In an ideal world, Weiser will be able to return to the starting XI as soon as possible. When asked about SVW’s current situation, Fritz said: “It would be wrong to look above us in the table as a promoted side, but looking down would also be a bit too negative. We can’t afford to rest on our laurels, though our current position makes planning easier than if we were bottom. I believe the best thing for us is to carry on doing things our own way.”

SV Werder Bremen’s next two games are against Bayer 04 Leverkusen (12/3) and Borussia Mönchengladbach (17/3), two sides directly above Ole Werner’s side in the table. Fritz, however, doesn’t want to look too far ahead into the future. “We have done well so far by focusing on our next opponents only,” explained the former Bundesliga player. “It will be a tough game against Bayer Leverkusen. They have a lot of quality and we will have to play as well as we did in the reverse fixture.”
