SV Werder Bremen

“It would be frustrating not to be there on the day when everything works out”

At the press conference ahead of the home match against FC Bayern Munich on Saturday evening (06/05, 18:30 CEST), head coach Ole Werner politely accepted the birthday wishes from the media representatives. Afterwards, the 35-year-old looked ahead to the upcoming match against the league leaders.

“It will always be something special”

It’s been almost five years since Marco Friedl pulled on the green and white of SV Werder for the first time. He only really knew the red of FC Bayern München before that, however. Alongside his Austrian hometown of Kirchbichl, the 25-year-old also called Munich home for much of his life and still has a special connection to the city and the club, so there’s added anticipation for the Bremen captain this week in the build-up to Saturday’s meeting between SVW and FCB (18:30 CEST).

Werder hand Schalke the win

Werder Bremen were defeated 2-1 away from home by Schalke. The match picked up pace straight away and both sides wanted to dominate the game. Werder showed more composure and were compact, giving Schalke hardly any opportunities. SVW deservedly took the lead through Marvin Ducksch (18’), but Schalke were still managing to get forward, only for Werder’s defence to stand strong. In the second half, Schalke came out full of energy, but Werder were content at first to defend their lead. The hosts knew how to counteract this, and scored twice in the final period, first through Sepp van den Berg (81’) and then Dominick Drexler (90+2’), ultimately deserving to win. It was especially hard to take since Werder came so close to finding the winner right before conceding in injury time.

SV Werder Bremen

“Overall a very disappointing day for us”

After the 2-1 defeat to FC Schalke 04, the Green-Whites were obviously very disappointed. After all, SV Werder were leading at half time and were playing well going forward. Following the game, head coach Ole Werner and the team explained why SVW were unable to turn their lead into a win after the break.

Going to Schalke with momentum

SV Werder Bremen will face FC Schalke 04 on Saturday evening (29/4, 18:30 CEST), another meeting against a direct rival who are fighting to stay in the league. After the away win against Hertha BSC, three points at Schalke could be a decisive step towards securing Werder’s place in the league. Head coach Ole Werner will again be without Niclas Füllkrug, but Marvin Ducksch and Niklas Schmidt are back in the squad after illness.

“Focus on what we can influence”

SV Werder Bremen travel to Gelsenkirchen on Saturday (29/04, 18:30 CEST) in search of their second away win in a row. “You could tell that the team received a massive boost from the special scenes we witnessed in Berlin,” said head coach Ole Werner. “As nice as that experience was, it won’t count for anything against Schalke this weekend.”

“I’ll always give him my advice”

The pictures from the SV Werder team bus on the way back to Bremen from Berlin spoke for themselves. The Werder players were cheerful, but also relaxed. “There were a few toasts made and a bit of relief after the games in recent weeks. We were pleased to pick up three points,” revealed Anthony Jung in an interview on Tuesday.

Werder win goal fest in Berlin

What a game! SV Werder Bremen beat Hertha BSC 4-2 (2-0). In the first half, the hosts were barely in the game. A brace from Marvin Ducksch (6’, 27’) put Werder firmly ahead, before Hertha stepped up a gear in the second half. Although Marvin Ducksch (51’) scored again and Mitchell Weiser (63’) increased the lead to 4-0, Hertha came back. Jessic Ngankam scored the first goal for the “Old Lady”, before Dodi Lukebakio converted from the penalty spot to make it 4-2 (79’). In the end, however, SVW were too solid in defence and Ole Werner’s side deserved to take three important points back home.
