FC Köln not buying into talk that Bayern Munich is washed

“Bayern is still the best team we have in Germany. I can’t imagine them just giving up yet. Maybe I’m a bit naive, but I don’t think they’re as bad as it’s made out to be. Far too many negative things are being written for my liking,” Baumgart said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “The change of coach from Julian Nagelsmann to Thomas Tuchel came as a surprise. As a team there are always phases where things are going better and sometimes worse. Bayern are now in a phase, after a total of eleven years, in which things are going a little bit worse.”

Checking in with Chelsea FC’s Kai Havertz

“Everything that can go wrong went wrong for us this year,” the Chelsea FC forward told kicker in an interview earlier this month. “The season actually started relatively quietly. We had a change of ownership, which was a big change for the whole club. And then Thomas Tuchel was fired, which of course always makes a difference in a team like this, when you’ve been successful with a coach and then gets fired out of nowhere.”

SV Werder Bremen

Getting the season started in Cottbus

After 93 days of pre-season, SV Werder Bremen are back. While the start of the Bundesliga gradually approaches, the Green-Whites’ first competitive fixture of the season will be a first-round DFB-Pokal clash against FC Energie Cottbus on Monday, 19th August at 18:00 CEST. It’s the second time in three years that SVW will play the Brandenburg side, who kicked off their 3. Liga campaign two weeks ago, in Germany’s domestic cup competition.

Serge Gnabry and Sadio Mané are not worried about potentially leaving Bayern Munich

According to a report from Kicker journo Georg Holzner (as captured by Twitter account @iMiaSanMia), Mané and Gnabry are relaxed that they will be a Bayern player for the 2023/24 season given that they have contracts that run until 2025 and 2026, respectively.

Champions! Bayern Munich win 11th straight Bundesliga title

The German top flight saved all the fireworks for the last Matchday, and the decisive games did not disappoint. Borussia Dortmund, Meisterschale in their hands, conceded twice in the first half to Mainz to throw the race wide open again, and Bayern Munich — who pounced with an early goal on Köln — looked good for their eleventh straight championship.

VfB Stuttgart

Defeat on penalties

VfB Stuttgart lost the Supercup at Bayer Leverkusen 4-3 on penalties, following a 2-2 draw after 90 minutes.

European soccer news: Flick’s dream Barça debut, PSG’s post-Mbappé era

The Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A and Ligue 1 all kicked off their campaigns on Saturday. In Germany, the Bundesliga season is a week away, but we were still treated to the Super Cup and DFB-Pokal.

SV Werder Bremen

“We need to show that we’re the favourites”

After a great run of performances in the second half of the Bundesliga campaign earned him the Werder Player of the Season award, followed by a European Championship in which he made his mark, Romano Schmid finds himself in undoubtedly the best form of his young career. With weeks of hard work in pre-season under his belt, the Austrian is raring to go for the competitive campaign. It all starts in the DFB-Pokal at Energie Cottbus, opponents against whom he holds fond memories.

SC Freiburg

SC progress to the second round of the DFB-Pokal

A new arrival featured from the start for Freiburg. Patrick Osterhage began alongside Maximilian Eggestein in the middle of the park. In the back four, Bruno Ogbus was handed a start. Both players were experiencing the backing of the travelling SC fans for the first time. A sold-out away end housed the 1,500 fans who had made the trip with the team. On top of the players who had missed the Fiorentina game, Merlin Röhl (muscular problems) and Kiliann Sildillia (minor foot injury) were also absent.
