Man Utd are currently ‘ahead’ of Premier League rivals Newcastle in the race to sign Napoli striker Victor Osimhen this summer, according to reports.

The Red Devils have made signing a new striker their priority in the summer transfer window with Erik ten Hag still looking for a permanent signing who can replace Cristiano Ronaldo.

after Man Utd mutually agreed to terminate his contract following a controversial interview with Piers Morgan.

Harry Kane has emerged as Ten Hag’s top summer target after the Tottenham striker scored another 30 goals in the Premier League this campaign.

The main problem that Man Utd could face in getting a deal for Kane over the line is Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, who is a notoriously tough negotiator and apparently has no intention of selling to a Premier League rival.

Kane also boasts La Liga giants Real Madrid as an option with that he is considering handing in a transfer request at Tottenham to seal a move away from north London.

But Man Utd have a back-up target in mind if they can’t get a deal for the England captain over the line with Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport reporting on their interest in Osimhen.

The Nigeria international has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford all summer with Napoli’s huge asking price always believed to be the main stumbling block.

And now Gazzetta dello Sport insist that Man Utd are ‘ahead’ of Newcastle in the race to sign Osimhen as they ‘can count on the prestige of a glorious and winning tradition’.

Chelsea have also been rumoured as a possible destination – but Man Utd have the edge over Mauricio Pochettino’s side too as the Red Devils will be competing in the Champions League next season, unlike the Blues.

At least €120m will be needed to convince Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis to sell Osimhen this summer .

Corriere dello Sport journalist Pasquale Salvione brought an update on Osimhen’s position at Napoli over the weekend and urged clubs to “bring the money” if they want to sign the striker.

“Until this happens, the rumors will remain only such. There are many big names that have to take on an important striker, including (Manchester) United, Real and PSG.

“In such a situation, the ambition of the Nigerian striker is understandable, as is the work done by his recruiters.”
