Liverpool pair departures will ‘forever haunt’ Reds as they’re warned of repeat in summer

A journalist believes the sales of Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum will “haunt Liverpool forever,” as they’re warned against making that mistake again, with more high-profile exits mooted.

Liverpool’s form for much of the season has left a lot to be desired. Indeed, they’re currently eighth in the league, with Fulham and Brighton occupying the two spots ahead of them.

Performances have been below the standard that is usually on show from the Anfield outfit. As such, there’s a lot of conversation about a shake-up in the summer.

Given there’s been six seasons since Jurgen Klopp’s side last finished outside the top four, if they do so this season, that should serve as motivation to change some things.

One journalist feels there might be high-profile exits on the way as Klopp looks to become a truly competitive side once again.

“Absolutely, because we’ve seen Georginio Wijnaldum and Sadio Mane leave,” he told GIVEMESPORT.

“They’re in the biggest rut of the Jurgen Klopp era, arguably, so why wouldn’t that be the case?”

Indeed, big names could make way for a new group of stars. However, the journalist believes the sales of Wijnaldum and Mane should serve as a warning to Klopp.

“I feel like Klopp needs to keep a core. The Wijnaldum and Mane sales will haunt Liverpool forever. They just really did not make sense to me.

“I know Klopp’s been keen to make an example, with the likes of Philippe Coutinho, of the fact that nobody is bigger than the club.

“I know Wijnaldum’s representatives and the player himself were looking for a contract more reflective of his value to the team. Once he didn’t get that, obviously he was shown the door, but I feel like it was a bad decision.”

There’s one big transfer that seems to have dominated Liverpool’s thoughts for some time: Jude Bellingham. It seems clear the Reds will attempt to snare the midfield superstar in the summer.

However, they might also have to see someone leave to be able to afford him. His quality, coupled with his age, means he will not be cheap.

The pair were both in the sides that won the Champions League and the Premier League. Mane was an especially crucial member of the side, scoring 23 goals in all competitions in his final season.

Salah has been Klopp’s main asset for years and is still in form despite the Reds’ struggles. He’s score 18 goals in all competitions this campaign – the next best haul is Darwin Nunez with 11.

As such, the sale of the attacking star could come back to haunt Liverpool, as those of Wijnaldum and Mane might be doing currently.
