Lampard ‘comfortable’ with Chelsea co-owner Boehly gate-crashing dressing room to give ‘pep talk’

Frank Lampard has responded after it was revealed that Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly gave the club’s players a ‘pep talk’ after the 2-1 loss to Brighton.

The Chelsea legend has returned to the club as interim manager until the end of the season.

It was hoped that the return of Lampard would provide a confidence boost to the Chelsea squad but they have arguably performed worse under him than they did while Graham Potter was head coach.

All three of Lampard’s games in charge have ended in defeat. They were comfortably beaten 2-0 by Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.

Lampard thinks Boehly’s post-match actions after the loss to Brighton “shows his passion”.

“I’m comfortable with that. There was criticism of our old owner not coming to games & being around. That wasn’t always true,” Lampard told reporters.

“But when an owner is very invested it’s their prerogative to have the input they want… it shows passion.”

When asked if Chelsea are “broken”, Lampard added: “We are not where we want to be. I think the word broken is a bit much.

“The league position is reality, and we are 2-0 down in this game. We have to work against that; I don’t think anything that happens tomorrow will be better than when we won the Champions League [in 2012].

We had many difficult moments on that run. Barcelona, Napoli… it was a huge run. Considering the moment we are in and the team we are facing here, of course it would be special.”

“I’m always big in football on personal responsibility & [accepting it] as a group. It’s something we have to address now.

“It’s a big part of the game. This is not a question of the commitment of the players. My job is just to focus the players.”

On Chelsea fans venting frustration towards Boehly, he continued: “Passion goes both ways. We have been fortunate enough to be successful for the last 20 years which means you want more of that. Passion comes from both sides… people always question everything in the early part of a process.”
