Chelsea hierarchy ‘clash’ over Potter’s replacement as Boehly’s stance on Nagelsmann becomes clear

Todd Boehly and Chelsea technical director Christopher Vivell are reportedly ‘clashing’ over who should replace Graham Potter at Stamford Bridge.

Over the weekend, Potter was sacked by Chelsea after just seven months in charge. His last game in charge was Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Aston Villa. This result saw them drop down to 11th in the Premier League.

Speaking on Potter’s exit, Boehly and Behdad Eghbali admitted they were “disappointed by the outcome” of the Englishman’s time in charge.

“On behalf of everyone at the club, we want to thank Graham sincerely for his contribution to Chelsea,” they said in a statement.

“We have the highest degree of respect for Graham as a coach and as a person. He has always conducted himself with professionalism and integrity and we are all disappointed in this outcome.

“Along with our incredible fans, we will all be getting behind Bruno and the team as we focus on the rest of the season.

“We have 10 Premier League games remaining and a Champions League quarter-final ahead.

“We will put every effort and commitment into every one of those games so that we can end the season on a high.”

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg (via Sport Witness) claim there were ‘no concrete discussions’ between Nagelsmann and Chelsea on Monday.

Vivell is ‘pushing’ for the club to appoint Nagelsmann, but Boehly would reportedly ‘prefer a more experienced coach’.

Though it is noted that this situation could alter as Nagelsmann is indeed ‘in the race’ to replace Potter at Chelsea.

Brendan Rodgers could be looked at by Chelsea as he was sacked by Leicester City on Sunday. He previously had a spell at the club as the manager of their reserve team.

Paul Merson thinks Rodgers should be “the one” Chelsea appoint next.

“I would like to see Brendan Rodgers in at Chelsea… I’m a big Brendan Rodgers fan. Unfortunately, things have gone horribly wrong at Leicester,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“In football it all comes down to timing, and let’s be honest, if Leicester were where Brighton are now, everyone would be calling for Rodgers to go to Chelsea.

“Rodgers ticks every box; he plays on the front foot, he started his coaching career at Chelsea and knows the club. Chelsea fans will question why they should turn to a manager who has just been sacked by Leicester.

“But if you look at the all-round picture, Rodgers is a good manager who has worked at top clubs like Liverpool and Celtic, won trophies at Leicester and put them on the brink of Champions League qualification. I just think Rodgers is the one.”
