The Wolves are ready for the new campaign! In their sixth and final pre-season friendly of the summer, VfL Wolfsburg overcame English Premier League side Brentford 4-0.

Niko Kovac’s charges were in promising form throughout the encounter in front of 3,512 fans at the AOK Stadion, where Patrick Wimmer gave the Green-and-Whites the lead in the 27th minute. Further efforts from Sebastiaan Bornauw (56’), Jonas Wind (66’) and Jakub Kaminski (86’) in the second half rounded out the scoreline.

The team’s first competitive game of the season is in exactly one week on Saturday 30 July (kick-off 18:00 CEST) in the first round of the DFB Cup, when they travel to the Ernst-Abbe-Sportfeld – home of fourth-tier side Carl Zeiss Jena.

VfL head coach Niko Kovac: “I’m very pleased that we played well on the whole. Of course, you shouldn’t set too much store by friendly matches but from the first day here we’ve all been pushing in the same direction and now we can see what’s emerging. Obviously our development isn’t finished yet and we still need to adjust and improve some things. But we’re on the right track and you can tell that all the players want to be involved when our competitive matches get under way.”

VfL Wolfsburg: Casteels – Baku (70‘ Fischer), Bornauw, van de Ven (70‘ Guilavogui), Franjic (70‘ Otavio) – Wimmer (70‘ Paredes), Arnold (70‘ Vranckx) – Waldschmidt (46‘ Svanberg), Kruse (46. Wind), Marmoush (46‘ Kaminski) – L. Nmecha (61‘ Bialek)

Brentford FC: Raya – Hickey (77‘ Stevens), Jansson (77‘ Crama), Bech Sörensen, Henry (77‘ Dervisoglu) – Onyeka (61‘ Lewis-Potter), Jensen – Mbeumo (77‘ Rasmussen), Dasilva (70‘ Baptiste), Wissa (61‘ Janelt) – Toney

Goals: 1-0 Wimmer (27.), 2-0 Bornauw (56‘), 3-0 Wind (66‘), 4-0 Kaminski (86‘)

Referee: Felix Bickel (Wolfsburg)

Attendance: 3,512 at AOK Stadion
