It was to be expected that Werner would face questions about the sensational away win over BVB earlier in the season. The gaffer, however, made it clear that what happened in the past will have no bearing on Saturday’s result. “We’re not looking at that game anymore. That wouldn’t make any sense. It was much more important that we put in a good away performance against a top side at that stage of the season in order to get a sense that our processes were working in this league,” explained the 34-year-old in Thursday’s presser.
The aforementioned processes have functioned very well for Werder of late. After the poor start to 2023, SVW have won their last two games in the Bundesliga (2-1 vs. Wolfsburg, 2-0 vs. Stuttgart) and are a side full of confidence. Saturday’s opponents, however, are also in good form and the gaffer is looking forward to the challenge. “They are bringing a certain robustness onto the pitch at this moment in time, they are allowing their opponents few chances and they are compact,” said Werner.

Ole Werner will have almost a full squad to choose from at the weekend. The recently absent Romano Schmid, Manuel Mbom and Maximilian Philipp are all available for selection. Mitchell Weiser is also back from suspension. Only the injured Felix Agu and the suspended Marco Friedl won’t be available at the weekend. “We have lots of options in certain positions. The competition for places makes us stronger if we go about it in the right away. I can only make the right decision because I know that whoever I pick will play well. The only time I can make a wrong decision is if I have to leave someone out who deserves to play,” said Werner.
Although he did not give much away in terms of the line-up, Werner told journalists that regardless of who he picks, he knows he has “a good set of lads” at his disposal.
