Next to the podium in the press conference room at the wohninvest WESERSTADION, the Bundesliga table was shown on a screen. The Green-Whites now have a cushion above the relegation zone, which they intend to increase in the coming weeks. Last year, Niklas Stark was deep in a relegation battle with Hertha BSC. “It’s different going to training now than when you are under huge pressure,” explained Stark in conversation with journalists. “You feel more loose and relaxed.”

At the same time, the centre back knows that Werder still has a way to go to meet their own expectations. In the first half of the season and the last few Bundesliga games, the team has proved it is fit for the top level, but they still have to be 100 percent committed. “People get caught up about things in football, but anything can happen,” said “Starki”, who was only given this nickname in Bremen because of the many “Niklas” in the team. “Of course we also want to look at the table, but the motivation in the team is to continue playing good football.”

“Every player is important for the team”

Captain Marco Friedl will miss the home game against Borussia Dortmund, so Milos Veljkovic will presumably return to the starting eleven. As a result, Stark could take one of the outer places in the three-man backline, instead of being in the centre as in previous matches. “If we get three points in the end, I don’t care where I play,” said the summer newcomer. “Every player is important for the team. If one is missing, then another has to be there. We don’t have to reinvent our game, we can compensate for it.”

This is an attitude that the Green-Whites have already demonstrated in the current season. For the home match against BVB, however, the great memories of the unbelievable 3-2 away win come back to mind. It was extraordinary at the time,” Stark reminisces, before turning to look at the league table: “They are motivated to play attacking football. We have to expect Dortmund to come here with high energy and wanting to take three points. We have to give everything to prevent that, otherwise it will be hard.”
