Qualification, debuts and friendlies – while Bundesliga action was on pause, seven VfB players were in action for their respective national teams. Following five wins, four draws and three defeats, they’re returning from their travels bit by bit this week. One player who didn’t miss a single minute is Konstantinos Mavropanos, who played from start to finish in Greece’s 3-0 win over Gibraltar in European Championship qualifying as well as in the 0-0 friendly draw against Lithuania.

Meanwhile, Josha Vagnoman was handed his first 10 minutes for the senior German national team by coach Hansi Flick in the friendly against Belgium, which ended in a 3-2 defeat. Silas also made his debut as a Congolese international, playing 28 minutes in the 3-1 win over Mauritania in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.

Borna Sosa was also involved in qualifying for EURO 2024 with Croatia. The left-back played 90 minutes in the 1-1 draw against Wales but didn’t feature in the 2-0 victory over Turkey. In the Kirin Challenge Cup 2023, Wataru Endo led out Japan as captain in a 1-1 draw against Uruguay, before playing 45 minutes in a 2-1 defeat against Colombia. Hiroki Ito played the full 90 minutes in both matches. Finally, Alou Kuol got 64 minutes as the Australian U23 side were beaten 1-0 in a friendly against Switzerland – that was followed by a 4-0 win against Como 1907.
