VfB Stuttgart boss Bruno Labbadia is urging his players to approach the sell-out clash with Bundesliga champions and current leaders Bayern Munich on Saturday (kick-off 18:30 CET) with courage. “Bayern have the most quality in the league,” Labbadia said. “As opponents you obviously need a perfect day. We’re going into the game with a bold approach. Against Bayern, we not only need a solid defence but also need to stand up and be counted on a regular basis when we’re in possession and express ourselves.”

Ito doubtful; unbeaten against Bayern last season

Labbadia will have to do without Borna Sosa, who is suspended after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season. There are question marks over the fitness of Hiroki Ito, who is struggling with a back problem, but Florian Müller is in contention for a place in the squad despite sitting out training in recent days with a wrist issue.

Tiago Tomas, meanwhile, returned from an abdominal muscle injury against Schalke last time out. “We’re happy that he returned sooner than expected,” added Labbadia, whose side showed they are capable of taking points off Bayern last season. VfB produced courageous performances in both league meetings with the Munich side in 2021/22, with both games ending in 2-2 draws. A similar approach might do just the trick this weekend.
