After progressing to the DFB Cup semi-finals in midweek, VfB head coach Sebastian Hoeneß again has his full squad available. “Everyone has come through it well, we have no injuries to report,” confirmed the new boss in Friday lunchtime’s press conference. To a follow-up question on striker Serhou Guirassy, he added: “90 minutes could still be too much for Serhou. We’re consulting closely with him and our medical department in our considerations. What’s clear is that he brought his physical presence and intensity as well as his technical quality into the game against Nürnberg. He’s big, dangerous in front of goal and a handful for any centre-back.”

On the back of the cup quarter-final victory, Hoeneß outlined VfB’s approach against Bochum: “The feeling of being able to win is incredibly valuable and can’t be replaced. It’s important we carry this positive energy. It strengthens the team and provides confidence. But the match at Bochum has a very different character. We’re bottom but we have the chance on Sunday to improve our position in the table.”

Hoeneß is expecting awkward opposition in Bochum, who are likely to make it an “unsettled” game. “We need to demonstrate structure and effort, be constantly awake and keep them away from our goal,” continued the 40-year-old. “At the same time, we also need to use our phases of possession, choose footballing approaches, keep the ball moving and make it hard for Bochum to get on the ball.”
