Silvan Widmer feels that his team is on the right track ahead of the first home game of the season against 1. FC Union Berlin (Sunday, 15:30 CEST). “Our results have been positive, but we need to keep on improving,” said the full-back who missed the win in Bochum due to illness. Widmer is looking forward to playing at the MEWA Arena for the first time in 2021/22. “I’m expecting the fans to really push us on. They can really give us an additional boost, particularly when we’re tired or suffering from the heat,” stated the Switzerland international.
Little has changed despite his new role
Getting to captain the Zerofivers this season is a great honour for Widmer and makes him extremely proud. “I will try to lead the team as best I can and help the lads with my experience. At the same time though, I don’t want to change or do anything differently to last year,” stated Widmer. “I don’t think a lot will change in comparison to last season. I tried to lead from the front, took on responsibility and played almost every game. It’s important that a number of players continue to take on responsibility, regardless of who is captain,” commented Mainz’s number 30.
