There was a lot of pride on show after full-time, as 1. FSV Mainz 05 spoke to the media following their third home win in a row against FC Bayern München. Three quick-fire goals meant FSV came back to win 3-1 and send a sold-out MEWA ARENA into ecstasy.

Post-match reaction from the team

Martin Schmidt: “After our third goal I was sure we would take something from the game. You could see that, minute by minute, we were getting stuck in and staying brave. We were also brave off the ball in the first half, but didn’t get the chance to do much with it – that cost us a bit of self-belief. After the last few minutes of the opening 45, when it became a bit back-and-forth, we plucked up some courage and took it with us into the break. Bo gave the lads a clear message then, that we needed to play more football. Our timing really improved in general after that. The fact that we’ve put three past Bayern inside 15 minutes is an unbelievable moment in the history of Mainz 05.”

Leo Barreiro: “I really don’t know what to say – it just feels incredible. To turn a game around is one thing, but the way we did it, and to go 10 games unbeaten is even better. My family was there and experienced the moment with me. That’s very important for me and makes a wonderful day even better.”

Karim Onisiwo: “You could see how tough things were today. Before the break Bayern played very well and clearly really wanted to win. The second half was a completely different story from us. You can see what’s possible when a team sticks together and gives their all as a unit. The league table is very tight, but if we keep playing like we did in that second half today, we’ll have played out a really good season.”

Ludovic Ajorque: “It feels fantastic to win against Bayern. We didn’t start the game well, but did well to fix that after half time and stopped giving them respect. We won the ball back higher up the pitch and were much more aggressive. We wanted to do everything we could to get the best result out of the game, and I’m happy to have helped the team turn the game around with my goal.”
