Although Mainz got their season off to the perfect start in Bochum on Saturday afternoon, the players and the staff are united, in that they believe there is a still lot of work to be done. “It wasn’t our best performance today, but the most important thing was the three points” explained newcomer Maxim Leitsch after the game.

Reaction to #BOCM05

Maxim Leitsch: “It wasn’t our best performance today, but the most important thing was the three points and it was also important for me to have a good debut. The atmosphere made it a difficult away game but we really gave it everything in the duels we were dangerous when we managed to get into the final third. In the second half we didn’t quite manage to tighten our grip on the game and make it too difficult for Bochum. We were, however, solid at the back. My heart was of course beating faster than it would have done in other games. On the one hand, you want to have a good first league game for your new club but on the other hand, it is also something special to play against your old club. It’s great that we managed to pick up the three points. If we had played well, but lost, then we would have left empty handed. It is obviously important but play well, but picking up the three points is the most important thing.”

Karim Onisiwo’s brace gave his side all three points

Karim Onisiwo: “I think everyone would have taken this at the start of the season. After our away record last year we set our sights high and we have now started with two wins. As a striker, it is of course great to score two goals. I played a lot of games last year and didn’t score too many goals. I need to go on a run and push on. If you get on a roll, the goals come easier. That’s why it is great for a striker to get two. I have to keep at it and become even cooler when the chance comes my way.”

Martin Schmidt: “It was a better overall performance in the first half but we defended better in the second. Luck was on our side but we created the better chances overall. It was a deserved victory if you look at the whole game. We still have work to do but it was great to pick up the three points.”
