Moussa Niakhaté has left 1. FSV Mainz 05 to sign for Nottingham Forest. Both clubs came to an agreement on the transfer on Wednesday. The French centre-back joined FSV in 2018 and went on to play 135 times in all competitions for the club, scoring nine goals. The clubs have agreed to not disclose the transfer fee.

Moussa’s made it clear that he wanted to play in the Premier League during his career. He will now have the opportunity to do so by moving to Nottingham Forest and we didn’t want to deny him this dream. The important thing for us was that the financial aspects of this transfer worked for us. Moussa developed into a true leader and our captain here at Mainz. He’s a great guy, who was always professional both in and outside the dressing room. He always gave his all for the club. We would like to wish him all the best for the rest of his career and for his personal future. He will always remain a Zerofiver and will always be a welcome guest here,” said board member Christian Heidel.

Moussa Niakhaté said to the Mainz fans: “The time has come for a new challenge for me. I personally wanted to say something to you. When I moved to Mainz four years ago, I never expected to receive so much love. I can’t imagine that I’ll feel such affection again at another club. I’m really thankful for my time here and to have played for this club, with these teammates and for you fans.”
