Danny da Costa is returning to 1. FSV Mainz 05. The 28-year-old defender is arriving on a free transfer from Eintracht Frankfurt for the start of the 2022/2023 and has signed a contract until 2025. Da Costa, who spent six months on loan at FSV during the second half of last season, was an integral part of the side that secured Bundesliga safety in superb fashion. The defender has played 214 games in the top two divisions of German football and in the DFB-Pokal. He is also an experienced player on the European stage, with 32 Europa League appearances and two Champions League appearances under his belt.

“Danny da Costa made a great impression here during his loan spell in the latter half of last season and not just in the sporting context. He is a strong, experienced, all-round defender, who settled into the side immediately with his strong mentality and his positive character. He is someone who embodies the values of Mainz 05. The club and Danny remained in close contact even after his loan spell. It’s great that we can now welcome him into the Mainz family on a permanent basis,” said sporting director Martin Schmidt.

“There is hardly a player who embodies the Mainz mentality more than Danny.”

Coach Bo Svensson is also delighted to have Danny da Costa back on board: “I am very pleased that Danny has agreed to join the club. It is no secret that he played a huge role in our survival bid last season. There is hardly a player who embodies the Mainz spirit more than Danny. He is a great athlete and a fantastic character, who has lots of experience in both domestic and in European football. Danny has the potential to become a favourite amongst the Mainz faithful,” said the boss.

Everyone associated with the club embodies these values and they suit me down to the ground as a person.

“My time at Mainz was short, but it was definitely one of the most exciting and special moments of my career. What we achieved not just as players, but also a club, in my six months here was nothing short of extraordinary. Mainz have a certain DNA both on and off the field. Everyone associated with the club embodies these values and they suit me down to the ground as a person. Bo Svensson is a great coach and an even better person. He has given me a lot and will help me even further in my development. I felt at home from day one and I am really looking forward to being a part of Mainz from the start of next season,” said Danny da Costa.
