Delano Burgzorg scored his first goal for the club after a month-long break due to myocarditis to give his team a 1-0 win against Newcastle United.

In the second and final friendly of the summer training camp, Mainz 05 showed a courageous performance against English Premier League outfit Newcastle United and were rewarded with a 1-0 victory high summer temperatures. The foundation for the victory was a strong defensive performance by the Bo Svensson’s side, with Delano Burgzorg scoring the game’s only goal in the 58th minute.

Mainz made the short journey from their base in Grassau, Bavaria across the Austrian border to Kufstein, Tyrol, for their second friendly in the team’s training camp. In addition to the return of a number of national team players, Angelo Fulgini made his debut for the club.

Set up in their usual 5-3-2 formation, Mainz initially focused on defensive security, while Newcastle tried to gain control of the game in the opening phases. In the first half an hour, the Magpies had the edge on the game which was interrupted by several fouls. Mainz’s counterattacking opportunities were often defended well by the English side and Mainz’s efforts therefore came from distance. Anton Stach (29′) and Dominik Kohr (30′) each tried their luck. At the other end, it was Eddie Howe’s team who were more dangerous in front goal. Kieran Trippier found Chris Wood, but Maxim Leitsch was on hand to save (35′). Shortly before the break, Stach tried his look again and came the closest his side had been to finding the back of the net with a powerful free kick towards goal in the 39th minute. However, the two sides headed into half time with the score at 0-0.

Burgzorg gives Mainz the lead

The 05ers picked up where they left off in the second half and Edimilson Fernandes’ cross created a double chance for Ben Bobzien and Kohr, but the two shots were blocked by Newcastle defenders (50′). At the other end, Robin Zentner was called into action with former Hoffenheim man Joelinton hitting an effort goalwards (54′). Four minutes later, the game had its first goal: Burkardt played Burgzorg in and the 23-year-old kept his cool in front of goal to slot past Dubravka and into the back of the net (58′).

Newcastle pushed for an equaliser in the closing phases and caused problems for a new-look Mainz defence. Callum Wilson was unable to meet Jonjo Shelvey’s cross (73′), before Shelvey himself fired an effort over the bar from just outside the area after an Allan Saint-Maximin cutback (78′). In the 81st minute, Dahmen pulled off a strong save to deny Wilson from close range shot; a powerful effort that bounced off the goalkeeper’s face. The Mainz efforts were rewarded as Svensson’s side managed to hold on and see out a 1-0 win.

Return to Mainz on Wednesday
