RB Leipzig suffered a 3-0 defeat against Mainz 05 on Bundesliga matchday 26. It was the club’s first-ever home defeat against the side from the Rhineland.
Marcus Ingvartsen gave the visitors an early lead in the 10th minute. Leipzig struggled to find a response and André Silva’s half chance was the closest they came to levelling the scores quickly (23’). Janis Blaswich pulled off a good save to deny Ingvartsen a second (25’) before Leandro Barreiro hit the crossbar with a header (30’). Shortly before the break, Timo Werner was denied by Zentner one-on-one.
The second half started badly for Marco Rose’s side, with Mainz doubling the lead just before the hour mark when Ludovic Ajorque lobbed Blaswich with a first-time shot on the turn (57’). Ten minutes later, Dominik Kohr added to the lead with a long-range shot. Despite a couple of chances for Werner, RBL were unable to find the back of the net and it was an afternoon to forget for the Red Bulls on matchday 26.
