RB Leipzigdefeated SC Freiburg 1-0on Bundesliga matchday 31.

Timo Werner, Kevin Kampl and Lukas Klostermann gave their thoughts on the win.

Timo Werner:

  • “It was a big week for us. To go up against Freiburg twice in one week with everything at stake is difficult. But given the way that we managed it, you can only be proud. It was a really good week.

We controlled the game over large stretched and could have scored earlier on. But across the pitch, we deserved the win. Sometimes you have to dig in and fight for the win.

We have a really tough away game in Munich and we have to win our two home games. If we can do that, I’m quite sure we can qualify for the Champions League.”

Marco Rose:

  • “It was an important win for us. As expected, it was a different kind of game to Tuesday’s. Freiburg were compact and aggressive and were set up to counter attack. It was clear that we needed some patience and be resistant to the counter. We had two or three chances to score early on, including a big chance for Timo. We didn’t take any of them and then it becomes an open game.

However, we had a lot of control of the game but didn’t create and big chances. In the second half, we won the game thanks to a very clinical move from Kevko. We gave it our all in what has been an intense and demanding week and we’re pleased with a victory that we worked hard for.”

Kevin Kampl:

  • “We knew how important these games were going to be, especially today’s. Obviously the DFB-Pokal semi-final was really important, but our main goal has always been Champions League qualification year on year.

I don’t score many goals, so I’m really pleased. The goal was obviously very important for us as a team, but I was also pleased on a personal note because my son had his fifth birthday yesterday and I wasn’t able to see him. I’m dedicating my goal to him, because it’s the second year in a row that I’ve not been able to see him on his birthday. The day before a game it gets you down a little bit because as a toddler, he doesn’t understand why his dad isn’t there. Hopefully he could see it was worth it on the television today.

I’ve been in Leipzig for a few years now. I kissed the logo because I love this club. The city has become a second home for me and my family and it’s a really special thing for us. It’s probably the reason that we’ve been here so long and have not wanted to go anywhere else. I feel at home here. I’ve never played in a team with such a chemistry as this one. The fans are also amazing; when you’re out in the city, you always get positive feedback. All of those things make it really special for me.”

Lukas Klostermann:

  • “We performed well in the two games against Freiburg. I think we did a good job again today and had some very good chances in the first half. We expected Freiburg to be a bit more compact and it was important that we could find the right balance and get into deep areas at the right times.

We knew that Freiburg would try everything. We let them pin us in a little bit too much, but overall we defended really bravely as a team and therefore deserved the win.

Everyone knew what was at stake and gave 100%. It gives us a boost for the upcoming games. The next game is always the most important one and that approach can help us finish in the top four.”
