“The tribute to Achim Stocker before the game was really amazing. It was the most important thing and meant more than the result of the game itself,” said Julian Schuster at Wednesday’s press conference, referring to the tifo the fans displayed ahead of Sunday’s home match against Mainz to mark 15 years since the club’s former chairman passed away.

The SC coach then turned his attentions to Friday evening, stating that his team are coming up against a “real tight-knit unit” in Union. “Last season was a difficult one for them, but they’re now back to how I’ve always known them. They defend with passion and their results reflect that. They keep things tight – creating chances against them is hard.”

Full strength in training

The SC coaching team had 23 players available in training this week, with everyone fit aside from the long-term injury concerns. 2,500 fans will travel up north to support the team, meaning the away end in Köpenick is sold out.

The head-to-head record is certainly not in SC’s favour going into the clash with Union, who are one point and one place behind Freiburg in the table. SC have never won in Köpenick in seven attempts in the league, while Freiburg are also winless in their last 11 Friday night away games in the Bundesliga. On top of that, Union are unbeaten in their last seven home games on this day of the week.

“It’s a good thing that I’m not always aware of such statistics,” said Schuster with a smile on his face. “I love games like these, they’re similar to cup ties. There’s a real energy at the Alte Försterei, matches there are fantastic. Both teams have started the season relatively well and it’s going to be an interesting test for each club.”

A chance to scout Bielefeld

While Freiburg got the better of Hamburger SV in the DFB-Pokal, Bo Svensson’s team were beaten 2-0 at Arminia Bielefeld last week, SC’s opponents in the round of 16. “That was obviously an interesting game for us, both with Friday’s match in mind and then to know what to expect for the next round of the cup,” explained Schuster. “Bielefeld clinically punished their opponents’ mistake and took the lead. That obviously helps you against Union – it gives you more space as the game goes on.”

Based on the stats, Friday night’s game will not contain too many goals. SC have restricted their opponents to just five clear-cut chances this season, a league low, while Union rank second in this regard (6).
