Kane to Man Utd: ‘Pessimistic’ Ten Hag fears pursuit of ‘top target’ will be ‘a waste of time’

There is reportedly a lack of optimism at Manchester United that they will be able to sign Tottenham striker Harry Kane this summer.

Kane’s Tottenham contract expires next summer and there are no signs he will agree fresh terms with the Londoners.

Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Real Madrid are all believed to be interested in signing the England skipper, who will probably need to actively push for a move if there is any chance of an exit.

All four clubs need a new striker and there are not many better out there than Kane, who would be the perfect replacement for Karim Benzema at the Bernabeu or Robert Lewandowski in Munich.

While Ten Hag is very keen to manage Kane, it has been claimed by Ben Jacobs that negotiating a deal with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will be very difficult.

Jacobs says Kane will cost north of £100million – which is quite steep for a player out of contract in 12 months – and the Red Devils have made their move early in order to avoid a summer-long saga.

He said: “As previously reported, it’s going to take £100m+ to stand a chance with Kane now.

“Manchester United have purposefully gone to the player side to see what is feasible and understand if Kane will help any transfer, should stumbling blocks be hit, by insisting on the move. Manchester United simply don’t want their time wasted which is why they have moved early.

“There remains low optimism anything will be possible despite him being a top target.

“Kane to Real might sit easier with Levy. And he has already sold both Gareth Bale and Luka Modric to Florentino Perez.”

Jacobs adds that Madrid could struggle to afford both Kane and Jude Bellingham, who is expected to join Los Blancos from Borussia Dortmund in the summer.

“But it wouldn’t be a surprise if come the end of the window Kane is still a Spurs player as he looks to edge ever closer to Alan Shearer’s Premier League goal scoring record (260). This is important to him. Kane is currently on 213 goals after scoring 30 last season.”

Should Kane stay at Spurs, he will probably be given the captaincy following Hugo Lloris’ exit.

Meanwhile, it has been reported by The Athletic’s David Ornstein that Spurs will announce the appointment of Ange Postecoglou as their new manager on Tuesday.

Postecoglou leaves Celtic after two years having won the Scottish Premiership in both of his seasons at Parkhead, with Saturday’s win over Inverness in the Scottish Cup final securing the treble.
