Maaßen: “We will take a critical look at the game”

Post-match reaction to 3-1 defeat in Mainz

FC Augsburg suffered a 3-1 defeat in Mainz on matchday 20, with striker Ermedin Demirovic getting on the scoresheet for FCA. Read on for all the post-match reaction to today’s defeat.

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “We expected to get drawn into a lot of duels today, which is what ended up happening. It’s difficult when we gift our opponents goals like that. We only have ourselves to blame for the defeat because we simply made too many mistakes. That was the difference in the end. We gifted our opponents the win.”

Ermedin Demirovic: “As a team, we failed to play the way we wanted to today. Thinking back on it now, just after full time, I can’t really explain how it happened. Overall it was a really poor performance from us. That’s why we deservedly lost, but we will pick ourselves up. The last weeks have seen us prove that we’re capable of showing a different side to ourselves and we will do so against Hoffenheim next week.”

Rafal Gikiewicz: “I played poorly today and so did the team. It’s tough to find the right words after a game like that. Mainz were always one step ahead of us. Results are determined by mistakes, and today we simply made too many of them. Games like this happen, so we need to learn from this and pick up points against Hoffenheim.”

Enrico Maaßen, FCA head coach: “We can’t mince words, as we had all pictured today going much differently for us. The first 15 minutes were as back-and-forth as we’d expected, and in the end it was individual errors that made the difference. We weren’t good at all, both in and out of possession, so it’s a deserved defeat. Our mistakes allowed Mainz to profit, so we will take a critical look at the game.”

Bo Svensson, M05 head coach: “It was a deserved win for us, in my opinion, and I’m happy with the win. We wanted to bring pace into the game and of course it helped us that we took the lead, as we were able to gain confidence from that. Augsburg getting a goal back wasn’t enough to knock us off our rhythm. It was important that we scored a third goal after the break, because Augsburg were fighting hard until the end. If we had conceded again, it would have been a nervy finish.”
