The permutations surrounding the final day of the 2022/23 Bundesliga season may be complex, but VfL Wolfsburg’s job is clear. Though the Wolves require assistance from elsewhere, they first need to focus on defeating already-relegated Hertha BSC at 15:30 CEST on Saturday. Victory over the Berlin outfit would boost VfL’s hopes of clinching a place in Europe next season.
Today at 15:30 CEST, the Wolves are playing for important points for one last time this season. With victory at home, Niko Kovac’s side can do their bit and increase their chances of playing in Europe next term. In this interview Maximilian Arnold, who celebrates his 29th birthday today, talks about the season, the exciting ending to the Bundesliga and the game against Hertha.
VfL Wolfsburg suffered a bitterly disappointing defeat on the final day of the 2022/23 campaign, losing 2-1 to already-relegated Hertha BSC to miss out on a place in Europe next season. The Green-and-Whites made the perfect start when Jakub Kaminski fired them ahead after just two minutes, but Ibrahim Maza made it 1-1 ten minutes into the second half before Marco Richter completed the turnaround in the 68th minute. The Wolves dominated for large spells prior to Hertha’s second of the game and created numerous opportunities to add to Kaminski’s early effort, but their profligacy proved costly. VfL therefore missed out on a place in Europe next season after finishing the campaign in eighth spot.
In the coming season the Wolves and She-Wolves will go hunting for points wearing light green jerseys with a white pattern at the Volkswagen Arena and the AOK Stadion, and a combative dark grey strip away from home. Not just from next term, in fact, but from now on: VfL fans will get a first glimpse of the new shirts on Saturday, when Niko Kovac’s charges face Hertha BSC at home as they look to secure European qualification, and on Sunday when the women play their last league game against SC Freiburg.
The Bundesliga is in the home straight of the 2022/23 season, with the final round of fixtures on Matchday 34 all kicking off at 15:30 CEST on Saturday. VfL Wolfsburg have their sights set on UEFA Europa League qualification when they host a Hertha BSC side whose relegation was confirmed last weekend.
The Wolves’ European hopes suffered a setback on Friday evening as they lost 2-0 at SC Freiburg. After a first half of few opportunities, Freiburg substitutes Christian Günter (71’) and Nils Petersen (75’) scored shortly after entering the fray in the second half to earn the hosts all three points. The home side were reduced to ten men in stoppage time when Nicolas Höfler was sent off.
The Wolves get Bundesliga Matchday 33 under way in Freiburg’s Europa-Park-Stadion on Friday (kick-off: 20:30 CEST) against a home side already assured of their place in European competition next season.
VfL Wolfsburg go into their Bundesliga Matchday 33 encounter away to SC Freiburg on Friday (kick-off 20:30 CEST) in sixth place, one rung below their hosts. At his press conference before the game, head coach Niko Kovac spoke about…
There will be plenty at stake for both VfL Wolfsburg and TSG Hoffenheim when the sides meet at the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday 13 May (kick-off: 15:30 CEST).
For a 20-year-old to start 23 competitive games for VfL Wolfsburg so far this season, in his first year in a new country, is pretty good going. Jakub Kaminski, who joined the Wolves from Polish top-flight club Lech Poznan last summer, has made a total of 30 appearances for the Green-and-Whites in the Bundesliga and DFB Cup. Ahead of this Saturday’s home meeting against TSG Hoffenheim (kick-off 15:30 CEST), the Poland international reflects on his first season with VfL and assesses the next opponents.
