Roots in the 1930s

There will be no VfL Wolfsburg involvement when Germany kick-off their milestone 1,000th game on Monday evening (18:00 CEST) – unlike previous squads that have had a Green-and-White presence – but it is still worth taking a trip down memory lane ahead of the milestone occasion.

VfL Wolfsburg

Still in action

The Bundesliga season may be over, but it’s not time for summer holidays quite yet for the VfL Wolfsburg players who have been called up for international duty. Jonas Wind, Mattias Svanberg, Sebastiaan Bornauw, Jakub Kaminski and Patrick Wimmer will all be involved in qualifying for next year’s European Championship in Germany – and the latter member of that quintet will face Green-and-White team-mates in both matches with Austria. Koen Casteels, however, has withdrawn from international duty after consultation with the Belgian FA due to injury.

On Saturday 9 September, Hansi Flick’s side will take on Japan in the latest international fixture to be held at the Volkswagen Arena. The game against the four-time Asian Cup winners will kick off at 20:45 CEST.

Out with ankle injury

The final match of the season against Hertha BSC also proved to be costly for Felix Nmecha, who will not travel to the national team next week because of a heavily bruised ankle. The 22-year-old had to be substituted shortly before half-time on Saturday following a collision. Scans over the weekend confirmed there was no serious ligament damage, but the midfielder is out of action for the time being. Following consultation with the DFB, he will not be available to Hansi Flick’s team for the three upcoming internationals.
