There will be plenty at stake for both VfL Wolfsburg and TSG Hoffenheim when the sides meet at the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday 13 May (kick-off: 15:30 CEST).

While the Wolves have now digested their heavy 6-0 defeat by Dortmund and want to continue battling for a top-six finish, Hoffenheim are eager for all three points to take a step towards ensuring their Bundesliga safety. At his pre-match press conference on Friday, head coach Niko Kovac spoke about…

…personnel: “We don’t have Paulo Otavio, Lukas Nmecha, Maxence Lacroix or Niklas Klinger available. Everyone else can play though, including Patrick Wimmer and Bartol Franjic.”

… Nicolas Cozza’s role: “He was at a disadvantage in that he arrived very late after we’d done our preparations. That means that of all the things we’ve worked on in training over the course of the season, he’s only done bits and pieces in training sessions. So far I haven’t said, ‘I’m going to pick him’, but whenever he’s played he’s given a solid performance. In Paulo we had a player with a great deal of dynamism, aggression and presence, both going forwards and in defence. That’s what you need. When we lose the ball you need to get back straight away. Paulo did that extremely well. Those are things Nicolas can and will work on.”

…lessons learned from the Dortmund defeat: “I told the boys straight away that I didn’t want to put too much of an emphasis on the 6-0 defeat because, although we’d lost twice in the previous ten games, we’d also played very well a lot of times. It was a slip-up, which can happen, but not by such a big margin. Losing is a part of sport, of football, of life. The only thing I didn’t like was the manner of the loss. If you don’t put up a fight and you’re not competing physically, then you can’t expect anything. We fell down but we need to stand up again against Hoffenheim.”

…the aim of qualifying for Europe and upcoming opponents Hoffenheim: “Everything is still possible. We’ve got three games left and the boys want to win all three. Hoffenheim are a team fighting against relegation – so we need to be willing to fight. If we can do that then I think we’ve developed far enough in terms of our playing ability to be able to create chances, take advantage of them and score the goals.”
