Union travel to take on city rivals

Taiwo Awoniyi’s 17th Bundesliga goal for 1. FC Union Berlin secured three vital points at home to 1. FC Köln on April 1. The home win – for the first time in front of a full house without restrictions – saw Urs Fischer’s men go to 41 points and achieve the minimum season target for the campaign. The atmosphere at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei returned to normal levels and it helped push the team on against a strong, physical opponent under the management of former Union striker Steffen Baumgart. Taiwo Awoniyi nearly broke through after two minutes but goalkeeper Marvin Schwäbe was quick to rescue his defence. Both teams snuffed out counter-attacking situations, with just Mark Uth and Jonas Hector forcing Frederik Rönnow into action. Grischa Prömel passed up two chances towards the end of the half while Rani Khedira shot wide. In the end, Hector’s loose backpass set up the chance for Awoniyi to score straight after the restart and secure all three points for the Köpenick club.

Union welcome Frankfurt to Köpenick

1. FC Union Berlin came away from the Olympic Stadium with derby bragging rights for the third time in this campaign, defeating Hertha 4-1. Urs Fischer’s produced a dominant performance to follow up on the 2-0 league win in Köpenick and the 3-2 German Cup triumph on Hertha turf. Union peppered Hertha’s box and goalkeeper Marcel Lotka was in inspired form. He was beaten by a header from Genki Haraguchi before Timo Baumgartl put the ball past Frederik Rönnow to bring the score level at the start of the second half. Grischa Prömel headed Union in front a few minutes later while Sheraldo Becker wrapped up a terrific display with a great goal to kill the contest. Sven Michel came on as a substitute and scored his first goal for the club following his January transfer from Paderborn.

Three from four successful semi-finals

A different kind of challenge faced 1. FC Union Berlin almost 18 years later. First, a change in FDGB-Pokal format meant the semi-final would be contested over two matches, the aggregate winner progressing to the final at the Stadion der Weltjugend in Berlin. The second was the opposition: a famous name in Dynamo Dresden. With 20,000 at the home leg on April 30 1986, 1. FC Union went down 2-1. Ralf Minge and Ulf Kirsten netted for Dresden, with Union’s Ralf Sträßer managing to give the Köpenick club a lifeline to set up a decisive return leg a week later on May 7.

Laurenz Dehl extends contract at Union

“Laurenz’s contract extension makes us very happy, as we want to train him at the right-back position in the future. He has already shown since the beginning of the season that he really brings a lot of talent there and we see him there with us in the foreseeable future. As it is important for him to gain match practice and further experience, we are aiming for a loan for the coming season,” said Oliver Ruhnert, 1. FC Union Berlin’s Managing Director for Professional Football.
