Laurenz Dehl extends contract at Union

“Laurenz’s contract extension makes us very happy, as we want to train him at the right-back position in the future. He has already shown since the beginning of the season that he really brings a lot of talent there and we see him there with us in the foreseeable future. As it is important for him to gain match practice and further experience, we are aiming for a loan for the coming season,” said Oliver Ruhnert, 1. FC Union Berlin’s Managing Director for Professional Football.

Leipzig stands in the way of cup final

1. FC Union Berlin secured a 13th Bundesliga victory of the campaign at home to Europa League semi-finalists Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday. Urs Fischer’s side produced a magnificent first-half performance which saw goals from Taiwo Awoniyi and Grischa Prömel, which claimed all three points for the Köpenick club. Awoniyi pushed clear of the Frankfurt defence to shoot home on 17 minutes before Prömel’s wonderful long-range strike on 21 minutes made it two. A third goal was more likely but Union were unable to take advantage of those opportunities. Jens Petter Hauge was denied by Frederik Rönnow before the break, and that was as tense as it looked for the Danish goalkeeper through the second half.

Union focus on Bundesliga points

1. FC Union Berlin suffered heartbreak in the semi-final of the DFB Pokal, going down 2-1 at Leipzig. Emil Forsberg came off the bench to score in the 92nd minute and complete the turnaround for the home side following a brave performance from the Köpenick club. Sheraldo Becker put Union ahead after 25 minutes, finishing off a cross from Christopher Trimmel. Union stayed in control of the game beyond half-time but were unable to turn dominance into goals. Felix Brych then awarded Leipzig a penalty kick on the hour mark with Andre Silva putting his side level. Leipzig’s pressure would prove too much for Union with Forsberg heading in the winner in stoppage time.

Union host Fürth in penultimate home match

1. FC Union bounced back from midweek German Cup defeat in Leipzig to come back and beat Domenico Tedesco’s team in the Bundesliga. After a good first-half showing, Union were handed a blow when Yussuf Poulsen scored inside a minute of the second half. But the Köpenick side showed their character to fight back and give themselves a massive chance of qualifying for a second year running for European football. Sven Michel and Kevin Behrens were the super subs on the day, scoring one each to give Union a first Bundesliga victory at the Zentralstadion.
