Marco Rose speaks about our win in the friendly against FC St.Gallen
VfB Stuttgart beat second-tier side Greuther Fürth 6-1 in a friendly on Saturday.
Saturday’s match is a duel between two teams whose seasons could hardly have been more different. While Union are still sat in third place in the Bundesliga, despite the 3-0 defeat in Munich last Sunday, Köln are as if caught in a netherworld in twelfth, unsure if they are facing up or down. One reason for this is their record away from home, with only eight points taken from 11 games on the road so far.
Hans-Joachim Watzke: “Emre Can has vast national and international experience, and he can now use all of that as captain. In this calendar year, he has made a significant contribution to the fact that our team has stabilised at a high level on the pitch. Emre is the right captain for our team! Gregor Kobel, on the other hand, is one of our most important transfers in the recent past. If he continues to develop so positively, he will have a great career ahead of him. We are rewarding his achievements by appointing him as vice-captain at a relatively young age.”

FCA head coach Jess Thorup sent out a strong starting eleven exactly a week before the resumption of the league season against leaders Bayer 04 Leverkusen (13th January, 15:30 CET). His side started the game in energetic fashion and went ahead in the 2nd minute. Fredrik Jensen beat TSG’s goalkeeper Oliver Baumann with a well-placed finish after being played in by Phillip Tietz. In the 27th minute, Tietz struck the crossbar with a fierce left-footed effort, whilst Finn Dahmen also had to make two first-half saves at the other end of the pitch (14’, 41’).

Lukas Nmecha’s tale of woe is a long one with many chapters. After breaking his ankle at the end of 2021 and missing eight league games, he was then hit with persistent patella tendon problems barely a year later. Last season, the German international striker managed just 18 appearances in the league and the DFB Cup combined.
There were a few outfit choices that aren’t often seen in the audience for BVB games: instead of Black and Yellow patches, some fans had “Iron Maiden” written on their tops. Bass player Steve Harris, a big fan of West Ham United, assembled Iron Maiden FC from members of the tour team and leads out the amateur side as captain whenever and wherever possible during the tour. Steve and his lads have already played in Eindhoven, Prague or Barcelona – and have almost always been on the winning side. “It’s great that we can play on such a great pitch,” said the bassist when he saw the youth stadium at the training grounds of Borussia Dortmund. When the band asked if BVB might be interested in a friendly match, the response from the Black and Yellows was highly enthusiastic, and the BVB veterans team turned up with a huge squad to take on the Brits, who only had twelve men available to start with.
