Dimitar Berbatov thinks Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag should keep Anthony Martial at the club for next season as he’s not showing his full ability.

The France international moved to Old Trafford from Monaco in 2015 in a deal worth around £58m with Martial touted as one of the hottest prospects in the world at the time.

But eight years on and the forward has failed to live up to his potential with inconsistent performances and numerous injuries frustrating supporters.

He did briefly show he could be the goalscoring forward that Man Utd need in the 2019-20 season, scoring 17 Premier League goals, before bagging a disappointing four goals the next campaign.

Martial is currently on seven in all competitions this term and there are rumours that if Man Utd bring in more than one new striker.

But Berbatov – who played with Martial at Monaco – reckons there is still more to come from the Frenchman and has urged Ten Hag to stick with him.

“I would like to see him stay. I played with Anthony at Monaco and I know that he has the ability to be better than he’s showing,” Berbatov told Betfred.

“The only thing he needs to do is stay injury free and he needs to know that the manager trusts him.

“He needs to know that he can make the odd mistake during the game without the possibility of being substituted or being left out the next game. He needs the full trust of a manager and then he can play to his maximum capability.

“I’m pleased with what I’ve seen of him since his return from injury and I’d like to see him stay at Manchester United.”

And Louis Saha is another former Man Utd striker that hopes Martial can hit his best form before the end of the season.

Saha told Paddy Power: “I’m sure that Anthony Martial is eager to show the talent he’s got and is frustrated by his injuries, especially because he can recognise that it’s a joy to play at Manchester United currently.

“He’s been at United for four years, but through different injuries, he’s never been able to be at his peak physical condition, playing 30 games a season. There is no doubt that he’s a strong player and can do a lot of things well, so I wish that he can find some form between now and the end of the season.
