Man Utd legend Paul Scholes thinks Erik ten Hag’s substitutions were “a little bit strange” in their 1-1 draw against Chelsea on Saturday.

The Red Devils snatched a point in the dying moments of the game at Stamford Bridge with Casemiro’s stoppage-time header levelling the scoreline after intervention from goal-line technology.

That came after Jorginho’s late penalty looked to have given Graham Potter’s side all three points with Scott McTominay bringing Armando Broja down inside the box.

Man Utd were on top for much of the game and possibly edged it but Scholes reckons Ten Hag’s substitutions negatively impacted the match.

“Today they were good for half a game they were really good and probably deserved to win the game,” Scholes told Premier League Productions.

“You think of Chelsea being at home, did they do enough to win the game I really don’t think they did.

“The subs were a little bit strange today. I thought Fred coming on when he did for Sancho didn’t really help the game. I thought Fernandes lost a bit of control of the game he had to come out to the left-hand side and wasn’t in the game as much.”

Man Utd lost their opening two Premier League fixtures under Ten Hag, to Brighton and Brentford, but the Dutchman has now turned things around with the Red Devils sitting in fifth place.

Man Utd are just three points behind third-placed Tottenham and Scholes was pleased to see Ten Hag’s side pick up a point at Stamford Bridge, which is a notoriously tough place to go.

Scholes added: “I think there’s progress going to a big team and getting a point is progress. You’d like to win those games still, of course you would but really looking back on the game they should have won it.

“There will be bigger tests ahead, going to Anfield going to Arsenal, going to these better teams. It’s now a big test for them to take that next level.

“I think they’ve sorted out problems at home those first two games were disastrous as we know, but they’ve sorted the problems out at home, they look dominant it’s that away form which I think that manager wants them to be.”

And Ten Hag was also pleased with a draw, the Man Utd boss said: “Of course it is a big moment, to get a point here, to collect the point, a well-deserved point,” said Ten Hag.

“I’m happy with this game, we created two or three really good chances, then they switched system.

“After half-time we were again organised, on the ball. I thought 1-1 was a fair result. We have to live with that and I’m happy with that as well.”
