The Sun have made a nonsense claim that Chelsea legend and former boss Frank Lampard could make an unexpected return to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea sacked Graham Potter on Sunday after they were beaten 2-0 at Stamford Bridge by Aston Villa with Unai Emery’s side pushing them into the bottom half.

Potter could only manage 12 wins from 31 in all competitions as the Chelsea hierarchy eventually decided to part ways with the former Brighton boss.

There was some sympathy for Potter with Chelsea bringing in 17 new signings over the last two transfer windows as the ex- Swansea City and Ostersunds manager had the unenviable task of bedding them in.

Chelsea have already been linked with numerous new managers with Julian Nagelsmann, Brendan Rodgers and Roberto de Zerbi among the names mooted.

But The Sun has surprised everyone with their ‘exclusive’ report on Wednesday suggesting that Chelsea are ‘considering’ making Lampard their caretaker manager until the end of the season.

Lampard was spotted making a ‘shock return to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night’ but the former Chelsea boss simply watching his former team play a game of football.

The Sun insist that after watching from ‘the stands’ Lampard ‘could even end up staying there as caretaker boss’, making it sound like he’s camping over until he’s told he’s got the job.

It would be another short-sighted backwards step from the club and it seems extremely unlikely that Todd Boehly and the Chelsea hierarchy would be giving this any thought.

Bruno Saltor took charge of their with N’Golo Kante’s performance a particular highlight of a boring match.

The result didn’t do Liverpool or Chelsea any favours with the Blues now with Bruno’s side 11th in the table and a huge 11 points away from the Champions League places.

Speaking after their draw against Jurgen Klopp’s side, Bruno said: “It’s been a really difficult 48 hours for everyone because it’s not the first time the players have been in this situation this season and they have suffered..

“As a player you invest a lot in the manager. They had a  great relationship with Graham and he has been really supportive with them after leaving.
