Liverpool are willing to pay ‘close to €100m’ to land Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes this summer, according to reports.

The Reds have made signing at least one new midfielder their priority for the summer transfer window after their poor season in the Premier League.

have been extremely inconsistent for most of the season with Jurgen Klopp’s men floundering in mid-table only a couple of months ago – but a run of six consecutive Premier League wins has seen them leap up the table into fifth.

They are now one point behind fourth-placed Manchester United – who have a game in hand on them –  and have a good chance of qualifying for the Champions League if they keep up their current form in their final three matches.

Klopp’s midfield took a lot of the blame for their poor form earlier in the season and they have been linked with numerous new faces to address their issues.

And now Spanish publication AS claims Liverpool could poach one of their Premier League rivals’ greatest assets with Newcastle United’s Guimaraes emerging as a target.

Klopp sees him as the ‘perfect option for the team’, especially now the race for Jude Bellingham is over, and Liverpool ‘would be willing to offer an amount close to €100m’.

Newcastle ‘will fight’ to keep Guimaraes and have him a new ‘world star contract’ to remain a Geordie.

Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona are also believed to be interested with the French side willing to offer ‘€25m more’ than Liverpool for the Brazilian.

But Guimaraes seems happy at Newcastle and declared his ambition earlier in the season to become a club legend at St James’ Park.

Guimaraes said: “To change country, to change leagues, and in a World Cup year as well, it was a really hard decision. But I think it was the right one. I’m so happy. It’s an amazing step. I feel like a Geordie now.

“I always dreamed of playing in the Premier League but, honestly, I never thought it could be this good. I’m proud of what I’m doing, of myself and of the club, but it was a difficult choice.”

Speaking about praise from Jamie Carragher, Roy Keane and other pundits, Guimaraes added: “For sure, it’s always a pleasure to hear things like that. It is one more motivation, but this is only my first full season at Newcastle. There is a long way to go. I love playing here, I love to bond with the fans, and I want to become a legend here.’
