Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has praised his sides reaction to Saturday’s Newcastle loss after they defeated Brentford last night.

Martinez said the club must now kick on and keep going if they are to achieve their goal of qualifying for the Champions League.

Speaking after , the defender said: “It was a massive three points for us, we want to be there, especially to qualify for the Champions League.

“I really liked the reaction of the team, the effort as well. We won the game and that was good.

“Now we get the three points and we have to think now to Everton and we have to work a lot.”

“[The manager] was happy. We have to keep going but with this mentality, not like against Newcastle. I’m really happy for the team and really proud as well.”

Manchester United were comfortably on Sunday, with Erik Ten Hag’s team drastically lacking spark and creativity.

United left-back Luke Shaw claimed the side lacked desire after the defeat, and that Newcastle ‘clearly wanted it more’.

Martinez said he ‘totally agreed’ with Shaw’s assessment and suggesting the players have to show more fight if they are to finish the season strongly and qualify for the Champions League.

He added: “Now every game is a final and you have to play with passion, you have to be ready, you have to be sharp, you have to fight for these three points.

“If you don’t do that, I think it’s not [showing] respect for this club. You have to be always every game fighting. Fighting for the badge.”

Martinez admitted the team had discussed the issues following the Newcastle loss and vowed to set the problems right.

The United defender said: “We spoke as a team. We know that it is not possible to play [like that], especially these kind of games.”

With ten games left to play of the season the Red Devils currently sit fourth in the Premier League, three points above Spurs.

They also have a Europa League quarter-final to consider next week, and will need to rely on the whole squad to get them through a congested period.

Martinez said: “In the end, we have a really good squad, so we have to have everyone ready to play.”
