Gabby Agbonlahor has admitted his belief that Mason Mount is “not fantastic” and is only an “ok player”, amid links with Arsenal and Liverpool.
Mount has been one of Chelsea’s most influential assets over the past few seasons. In his first senior campaign at the club, he scored seven league goals and provided six assists in 37 games.
Beyond that breakout season, he became a firm fixture in the Blues side. He’s now played just shy of 200 games for the club, in which he’s been directly involved in 70 goals.
That included a top season last term, in which he netted 11 times in the league, alongside 10 assists, in 32 games.
However, that’s not been enough to convince former Premier League forward Agbonlahor he’s worthy of praise, with the pundit arguing he’s not a great asset.
“27 goals in 129 appearances. Come on, let’s be honest here, he’s not fantastic,” he said on talkSPORT.
“The stats show he’s an ok player.”
While Agbonlahor is not convinced by the playmaker, a lot of sides are. That he’s played so frequently for Chelsea over the past few seasons shows how highly they think of him.
However, that’s not showing at the moment, with contract discussions seemingly going poorly. Indeed, Mount seemingly , and Chelsea don’t seem to have budged on that yet.
Confidence is reportedly , though. That seems to hinge on the potential appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as the club’s manager.
Meanwhile, there are other Premier League outfits that feel Mount is worth taking a look at. Indeed, high-flying Arsenal and Liverpool have both reportedly registered an interested in him amid the uncertainty over his contract.
Both of those sides seem ready to jump at the opportunity to snare the midfielder. If it becomes clear he won’t pen a new deal with the Blues, given his current one runs out at the end of next season, they’ll surely entertain the idea of a sale.
As such, Agbonlahor seems to be in the minority when it comes to his rating of Mount. Some of the league’s biggest sides think he’s a top asset, and a couple would surely be willing to pay good money to acquire his services.
