Liverpool star says team have ‘massively’ let themselves down and must ‘put right’ results

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson claimed his side’s away form needs to be fixed if the club are to get anything out of their failing season.

The Reds are currently eighth in the Premier League, seven points off of the Champions League places, and last night away from home.

Speaking after the draw, Robertson said: “Away from home, results haven’t been great. From now till the end of the season, we need to try and put that right and next season, we’re going to need to fix that if we want to be competing for anything because you need to pick up points on the road and that’s where we’ve let ourselves down massively this year.”

Liverpool’s away form has been one of the main factors in the Merseyside club’s drop off this season.

In games at Anfield, Liverpool have had nine wins from 13 matches, but only mustered three victories in 15 games away from home.

Saturday’s draw against Chelsea was just the 13th away point Liverpool have picked up all season, but Robertson insisted the result was not crucial to their campaign.

The Scottish international said: “When you look over a season, a point at Stamford Bridge isn’t the one that will define our season.

“Usually a draw here isn’t a bad result – it’s always a tough place to come and that was going to be no different tonight, but there’s been other games when we’ve dropped points when we shouldn’t have and not taken our chances and things like that.

“We had to show a reaction and try and put Saturday [at Manchester City] to one side. We had to come here and be a lot more defensively secure and I think we did that by keeping a clean sheet and limiting their chances. It was a game with two teams lacking in confidence and I think you could see that. That’s why it probably finished 0-0.”

Liverpool will be hoping to repeat the feat they achieved in 2021, when with ten games remaining they were in the same position they are now, eight points behind the top four, and still qualified for the Champions League.

Robertson added : “Every game you play for this club is big but obviously it’s better when you’re challenging for trophies and trying to win cups. But every game is important. Wherever we’ve gone, our away ends are full and they’ve followed us all season and we’ll keep fighting until the end.

“Whether it’s enough or not (to get top four), time will tell and if we do that and get as many points as we can with 10 games left, let’s see where we finish. Then we can re-evaluate in the summer and look at what we have to do differently but we’ll keep fighting.”

Liverpool will take on league leaders Arsenal at Anfield this Sunday as they try to get their league campaign back on track.
